Summary

From the #1 New York Times bestselling authors: Racing to uncover the mystery of several severed feet found floating in the Gulf of Mexico, Agent Pendergast is faced with the most inexplicable challenge of his career。

A startling crime with dozens of victims。 Appearing out of nowhere to horrify the quiet resort town of Sanibel Island, Florida, dozens of identical, ordinary-looking shoes float in on the tide and are washed up on the tropical beach—each one with a crudely severed human foot inside。

A ghastly enigma with no apparent solution。 Called away from vacation elsewhere in the state, Agent Pendergast reluctantly agrees to visit the crime scene—and, despite himself, is quickly drawn in by the incomprehensible puzzle。 An early pathology report only adds to the mystery。 With an ocean of possibilities confronting the investigation, no one is sure what happened, why, or from where the feet originated。 And they desperately need to know: are the victims still alive?

A worthy challenge for a brilliant mind。 In short order, Pendergast finds himself facing the most complex and inexplicable challenge of his career: a tangled thread of evidence that spans seas and traverses continents, connected to one of the most baffling mysteries in modern medical science。 Through shocking twists and turns, all trails lead back to a powerful adversary with a sadistic agenda and who—in a cruel irony—ultimately sees in Pendergast the ideal subject for their malevolent research。

Constance and Pendergast are pure love。 I love reading this series。 And the mysteries are always interesting。 I do have one complaint, but for those of you who decide to read it, you'll probably notice it too。 Constance and Pendergast are pure love。 I love reading this series。 And the mysteries are always interesting。 I do have one complaint, but for those of you who decide to read it, you'll probably notice it too。 。。。more

I've read every Pendergast novel。 I think I enjoyed this the least。 I don't read them for the action, even though there sometimes is that。 Preston and Child have created a rich cast of characters and a fascinating Pendergast family legacy。 Aloyisius is the cerebral star。While this volume includes Pendergast's ward, Constance Green, she is turned into an action hero which absolutely does not fit with her long and fascinating history。 The only other recurring characters, Roger Smithback and Armstr I've read every Pendergast novel。 I think I enjoyed this the least。 I don't read them for the action, even though there sometimes is that。 Preston and Child have created a rich cast of characters and a fascinating Pendergast family legacy。 Aloyisius is the cerebral star。While this volume includes Pendergast's ward, Constance Green, she is turned into an action hero which absolutely does not fit with her long and fascinating history。 The only other recurring characters, Roger Smithback and Armstrong Cold Moon are veterans of on other novel and are not really developed here。The authors go all in for action, gore, and horror in this outing。 No doubt it works for many readers。。not for this one。 。。。more

Another great and exciting episode in the Pendergast series。 If you have never read one, go back to the beginning。 If you are a fan, this latest adventure does not disappoint。 While strange and tangled in the beginning, it resolves itself fantastically in the final segment, with more action than you can imagine。 I really enjoyed how Constance emerged in this one as such a powerful character (of course in her own way she always has been)。 This one is filled with such horror, in terms of those who Another great and exciting episode in the Pendergast series。 If you have never read one, go back to the beginning。 If you are a fan, this latest adventure does not disappoint。 While strange and tangled in the beginning, it resolves itself fantastically in the final segment, with more action than you can imagine。 I really enjoyed how Constance emerged in this one as such a powerful character (of course in her own way she always has been)。 This one is filled with such horror, in terms of those who becomes Nazis in service to patriotism (always frightening)。 There are some sad losses of minor characters, but I guess that is partly their role。 I also felt we saw some serious development of Pendergast's character, though he is already so well developed。 。。。more

Because you like Dean Koontz, you may enjoy the writing style of Lincoln Child, the author—with Douglas Preston—of Crooked River。 Fast-paced, and occasionally gruesome, this intricately-plotted mystery should appeal。

Another solid entry in the seriesI've been a Pendergast fan for years and there have been perhaps just two occasions where I've been a little disappointed in the story and direction it took。I loved this one。 Fast paced, well written, strong characters, and a mystery you cannot hope to unravel until very late in the tale。Not everyone comes away intact (in both a physical and psychological sense) but this is a very exciting and satisfying read。 Another solid entry in the seriesI've been a Pendergast fan for years and there have been perhaps just two occasions where I've been a little disappointed in the story and direction it took。I loved this one。 Fast paced, well written, strong characters, and a mystery you cannot hope to unravel until very late in the tale。Not everyone comes away intact (in both a physical and psychological sense) but this is a very exciting and satisfying read。 。。。more

A fast paced ride through some particularly horrid adventures。 A much more disturbing than the usual books in the series。

Nobody does a plot twist like this team。

Almost as good as previous Pendergast novels。Love the suspense and storylines of the Pendergast novels; yet Pendergast just doesn’t shine in this one like he has in previous adventures。

One of the better books in the series。 I enjoy the stories where Constance is involved & gets some page time & Coldmoon is turning into a very interesting presence/partner。

Bizarre, gruesome and oh so engrossing。 I've almost forgotten how addictive these books were。 I'm finally up to date with the Pendergast series and it's because I was trying to save some for later。 And now I'll be waiting for the next one with bated breath。 (That cover for Bloodless is my favourite of the series - so creepy and atmospheric。。 ) Bizarre, gruesome and oh so engrossing。 I've almost forgotten how addictive these books were。 I'm finally up to date with the Pendergast series and it's because I was trying to save some for later。 And now I'll be waiting for the next one with bated breath。 (That cover for Bloodless is my favourite of the series - so creepy and atmospheric。。 ) 。。。more

When over one hundred shoes containing feet wash up on a Florida Island, Pendergast is called in to solve the case。 He and Constance Green show up and start investigating。 Constance finds a haunted house to live in and start ghost breaking。Despite a good premise, I felt this one was a bit under-whelming。

I've read the entire Pendergast series and I'm a big fan。 But I was quite disappointed with #15 through #17。 I was about to give up on the series。 But the last book was a big improvement, and this book has really returned to the magic of the earlier books。 SPOILERS: The promotion of Constance Green to a major independent character and (again) having Agent Coldmoon as a full partner really works。 It has always helped the books when the authors used well written secondary characters, as in the ear I've read the entire Pendergast series and I'm a big fan。 But I was quite disappointed with #15 through #17。 I was about to give up on the series。 But the last book was a big improvement, and this book has really returned to the magic of the earlier books。 SPOILERS: The promotion of Constance Green to a major independent character and (again) having Agent Coldmoon as a full partner really works。 It has always helped the books when the authors used well written secondary characters, as in the early books set in New York City。: END SPOILERS。 As always, much of the action, situations, side stories, and evil characters are rather over the top and beyond the realm of believability。 But that's a positive effect in these books。 Glad I didn't give up on the series。 。。。more

Another well-told story。 The reason that I did not give this 5 stars was the fact that there wasn't enough information for the reader to solve the mystery on their own。 Another well-told story。 The reason that I did not give this 5 stars was the fact that there wasn't enough information for the reader to solve the mystery on their own。 。。。more

Another page turner with intense action & excitement。

Pretty gruesome, with some predictable twists, but nevertheless captivating for the reader。

A very good tale of a crime that takes place in Florida。 Constance has a bigger role in solving a crime and helping Pendergast。 Coldmoon returns to help。

Always entertainingAnother wild adventure with Agent Pendergast and friends。 The Sherlock Holmes feel makes these mysteries enjoyable and a fast read。

I love this series but the last few books seem to be jam packed with too much information。 Its almost like they are doing 2 or 3 stories that happen to come together in the end。 The book is interesting and I did like it, it just feels like its no longer just a Pendergast story。 More of a Pendergast story with a few other of the characters getting sub stories in the novel。 Again, interesting topic and it does come together well just alot going on。 Too give an idea of what I mean, this book has 72 I love this series but the last few books seem to be jam packed with too much information。 Its almost like they are doing 2 or 3 stories that happen to come together in the end。 The book is interesting and I did like it, it just feels like its no longer just a Pendergast story。 More of a Pendergast story with a few other of the characters getting sub stories in the novel。 Again, interesting topic and it does come together well just alot going on。 Too give an idea of what I mean, this book has 72 chapters and each one goes back and forth between 2 to 3 characters along with Pendergasts。 Like I said it does work but for me feel like there is too much going on。 Prefer their older Pendergast novels over this new style。 。。。more

Another thrilling case solved by Agent Pendergast, his reluctant partner, Agent Coldmoon, and last but not least, the mysterious Constance Greene!

I enjoy Pendergast and Coldmoon so much! Adding Coldmoon into the mix has brought new life to this series and I hope he is around for some time。 And, having Constance in a book for more than a few sentences is always worth an extra star in a review。 She is one of my favorite characters。 This was an interesting mystery with intriguing characters。 Maybe a few too many characters, but still fun。 Can’t wait for the next book!

Not up to the standards of previous Pendergast books。 Felt like this was written not by Preston and Child but by some assistant trying to duplicate their writing style。 The "haunted house" subplot felt tacked on just to give Constance something to do, some reason to have her involved in the story。 Also these examples of sloppy writing: (view spoiler)[ very early on in the story the local police chief has to shoot his own dog because it is running away with one of the feet that washed up on the b Not up to the standards of previous Pendergast books。 Felt like this was written not by Preston and Child but by some assistant trying to duplicate their writing style。 The "haunted house" subplot felt tacked on just to give Constance something to do, some reason to have her involved in the story。 Also these examples of sloppy writing: (view spoiler)[ very early on in the story the local police chief has to shoot his own dog because it is running away with one of the feet that washed up on the beach。 It's never mentioned again until well into the book when an "oh right, the dog was killed" kind of thought was tossed into the story。 It really felt like what happened to the dog had been completely forgotten about up to that point。 And it is never mentioned again。 And this: the same police chief breaks his leg and yet within a few hours he's driving a car for several hours and managing to walk down basement steps。 Just not believable。 (hide spoiler)]Huge info dump at the end tries to pull together all the random bits of plot but it just comes across like the book was finished in a hurry。 。。。more
